Peter listens carefully and hears breathing beyond the kitchen, which breaks the illusion of the dining area for him, and he cues the rest of us. Crimp realizes the symbol for the Jaded One is upside down, and reiterating their daughters wakes Diane out of a trance of some kind. She says she locked the twins in the storm cellar.
